What Are Flexi Toys?
Flexi toys (short for flexible toys) are 3D printed figurines made up of many small interlocking segments that move independently of each other. The result is a toy that wiggles, bends, curls, and poses β it's oddly satisfying to hold, squish, and fidget with.
They're also known as articulated toys, fidget toys, or pocket pets β depending on the shape and size. The most popular designs are animals, which is why you'll often hear people refer to them as articulated animal toys or flexi animal figurines.
At Aussie Fusion, our range of flexi toys is called Wobaloos β 3D printed articulated animals that wiggle, flex, and pose in your hands. With over 50 animals to choose from, there's a Wobaloo for everyone.
How Are Flexi Toys Made?
Flexi toys are made using FDM 3D printing β a process that builds objects layer by layer from a spool of filament. What makes flexi toys special is that they're printed in place, meaning all the moving joints are printed as a single piece without any assembly required.
When you pull a flexi toy off the print bed, it's already articulated and ready to wiggle. No glue, no screws, no snapping pieces together β just pure, smooth, satisfying movement straight from the printer.
At Aussie Fusion, we use eco-friendly PLA filament, which is made from plant-based materials and is fully biodegradable. It's strong, detailed, and comes in a huge range of vibrant colours β though because we print to order, exact colours vary between batches, making each toy slightly one of a kind.
Why Are Flexi Toys So Popular?
There are a few reasons flexi toys have taken off in recent years:
- They're genuinely satisfying to hold. The way the segments move is smooth and tactile β it's hard to put down once you pick one up.
- They're great sensory toys. The repetitive motion of flexing and posing a flexi toy can be calming and grounding, making them popular with people who benefit from sensory stimulation or fidgeting (including those with ADHD, anxiety, and autism).
- They're incredibly detailed. Modern 3D printing allows for intricate designs β scales, feathers, fur texture, expressive faces β that would be impossible or prohibitively expensive to produce any other way.
- They're collectible. With dozens of animal designs available, it's easy to build a collection. Many customers come back to try new animals each time.
- They're affordable and giftable. At Aussie Fusion, our Wobaloos start from just $5 β making them perfect for lolly bags, party favours, small gifts, stocking stuffers, and classroom rewards.
What's the Difference Between Flexi Toys, Fidget Toys, and Pocket Pets?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but here's a quick breakdown:
- Flexi toys β refers to the articulated, flexible construction. Any 3D printed toy with moving segments could be called a flexi toy.
- Fidget toys β refers to the function. Flexi toys double as fidget toys because the repetitive motion of flexing them is calming and satisfying.
- Pocket pets β refers to the size and concept. A pocket pet is a tiny, palm-sized animal companion you can carry with you β no feeding required! Our Wobaloos are the perfect pocket pet: small enough to pop in a pocket, fun enough to pull out and show everyone.
- Articulated toys β refers to the technical design. An articulated toy has joints that allow movement, similar to an action figure. Flexi toys take this further by having many joints along the whole body.
At Aussie Fusion, our Wobaloos tick all four boxes β they're flexi, they fidget, they're pocket-sized, and they're fully articulated.
Are Flexi Toys Safe for Kids?
Flexi toys are popular with kids and adults alike, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Not suitable for children under 3 years β the small segments and fine details could be a choking hazard for very young children.
- Adult supervision recommended for ages 3β6 β younger kids enjoy flexi toys but should be supervised during play.
- Ages 6 and up β flexi toys are generally safe for independent play and are a popular choice for school-aged kids, tweens, and teens.
- Adults love them too β desk toys, stress relief, collector items. Flexi toys are genuinely ageless.
Our Wobaloos are printed from PLA filament, which is non-toxic and food-safe. They don't contain any BPA, phthalates, or other harmful chemicals.
